Redefining

Responsibility:

Effectively Communicating
ESG, DEI, and Purpose in an
Era of Extreme Scrutiny

Overview

Over the past five years, companies have faced increasing scrutiny from stakeholders, politicians, and consumers for their communication around topics on a range of environmental and social issues. Critics from both the Right and the Left and from inside and outside the organization have challenged companies for going too far or not going far enough. At the same time, a challenging economic environment, growing anti-business sentiment, anti-DEI orders in the US, and anti-greenwashing legislation in Europe have all contributed to increasing risk for companies.

In this environment, companies risk reputational damage, shareholder pushback, and potential exclusion from government contracts if their messaging is not carefully calibrated to navigate these challenges.

Our Objective

Return on Responsibility (RoR) is a strategic communications framework designed to help companies pursue their desired ESG strategies while minimizing political and reputational risk. Grounded in extensive Language Strategy research and real-world experience in making the business case for ESG strategies, our approach transforms how companies articulate strategies, commitments, and programs around ESG, CSR, and purpose (collectively “ESG”) by reframing these efforts using language that is easier to understand, more credible, and more broadly supported by people across the political spectrum.

Research has shown that the public expects companies to act as responsible businesses – serving more than just shareholders. But many companies have moved beyond responsibility to values-based messaging that can be highly polarizing.

Using the RoR Framework, all actions and commitments are connected to a clear business rationale. By moving away from coded political language, companies can focus on value being delivered rather than values that may not appeal to all stakeholders.

By aligning ESG messaging with financial impact, market differentiation, and fiduciary priorities, RoR helps companies demonstrate that responsible business practices drive growth, mitigate risk, and enhance shareholder value.

This approach is designed to:

Defuse Political Attacks
from both Right and Left:
By identifying areas where ESG-related efforts may be perceived as driven by political ideology, we highlight messaging gaps that need to be reframed. This approach focuses on recognizing where these efforts may be misunderstood and can be repositioned to emphasize their connection to financial performance and risk management, rather than political agendas.
Connect with Everyday Americans:
We will identify any gaps where ESG messaging may not clearly communicate tangible business benefits like job creation, energy savings, and community investment.
This helps ensure that the narrative connects with local communities and everyday Americans, demonstrating how these efforts contribute to real-world benefits rather than abstract environmental or social causes.
Refine Employee Communications & Engagement:
As the company refines its narrative on climate and DEI to strengthen its reputation and competitive positioning, we will identify any internal communication gaps that will hinder employee understanding or articulation of the company’s direction. Our approach aims to pinpoint areas where messaging can be improved so that employees will better understand and articulate the company’s direction.
Strengthen Investor
and Public Confidence:
We will identify where the company’s ESG messaging may fail to explicitly connect responsible business practices to profitability and long-term value creation. This approach will highlight areas where messaging could be more effectively framed to reassure investors and the public that these commitments are integral to business success.
